After last week’s iPhone 4S unveiling, Siri was one of the most talked-about features. With Siri, the iPhone 4S will be able to answer just about anything you ask it, from the weather report to nearby points of interest. It can also read messages and notifications aloud and even let you dictate messages of your own instead of relying on the phone’s on-screen keyboard.

There’s only one drawback to Siri: Unless you’re planning on upgrading to the iPhone 4S, the feature is out of your reach. And Siri Assistant—the app on which Siri is based (and which Apple acquired last year)—has already disappeared from the App Store; the app will stop working on October 15, so even existing Siri Assistant users face a potentially silent future.

Blackberry crash because of core switch failure at RIM

BlackBerry users around the globe have been experiencing problems with connecting to the Internet. While text messaging capabilities are not affected, this still leaves uses with a crippled BlackBerry that costs them a substantial amount on monthly fees though it can’t do anything beyond what a normal phone can. This is a big deal, considering that people get a BlackBerry because of its smartphone capabilities and not just its looks.

The first time BlackBerry users experienced problems worldwide was just yesterday, which BlackBerry UK then assured users through a tweet that the services has been restored. That was just about 18 hours ago, so when another crash was experienced a few hours after that, it isn’t surprising that people are making a bigger deal about it, especially since it is both browsing and messaging capabilities that have been affected. In short, BlackBerry’s are nothing but glorified calculators for the moment.

Well sort of seeing as though it doesn’t exist… not yet anyway.

The iPhone 4S has left Apple fans divided. It might be a new phone on the inside, but after 15 months of rumours and longing, many expected a genre-smashing design too.

Fortunately, the next iPhone will almost certainly enjoy a fresh look from Apple design guru Jonathan Ive. You’ll have to wait at least a year before any official announcement, but if you look hard enough, cross your fingers and make a wish, there are already some clues about what it might offer.

In writing my review of the iPhone 4S I got to spend some time playing with the Siri voice-recognition engine. And so I made a video, so you could see it in person. It’s embedded in the review itself, but I’ve also added it below as well as putting it our (soon to be revived) Macworld Video podcast stream.

(Eagle-eyed readers will note a particularly unfortunate—albeit funny!—transcription error when the iPhone 4S tries to spell its own name. It was left in place in the interests of verisimilitude. Such is life in our science-fictional universe.)

Apple‘s loss last week was enormous. I wrote all that I felt I could in the blog farewell on my website to a man I was lucky enough to know a little and admire a great deal. Most are probably now profoundly sick of hearing either how much he was under or overestimated as a man and as a figure of his times. I never knew of any human beings whose achievements were exactly estimated.

The word “estimate” is the clue here. I only know that if I had grandchildren and they heard me tell of my meetings with him they would feel as I might if my grandfather had told me about meeting Henry Ford, Rockefeller or Irving Thalberg. It might be, after all, that Aldous Huxley overestimated Henry Ford by making the dystopian future in his Brave New World name its calendar after him.

Macworld review of the new Apple iPhone 4S
First there’s that name: It’s the old phone’s name with an S attached to it. As the iPhone 3GS taught us, adding an S to an iPhone’s name can represent numerous under-the-hood improvements, but it doesn’t send shivers down your spine like incrementing a number by one and unveiling a redesigned exterior with mind-blowing features that may or may not include anti-gravity.

‘Karan Johar, Aditya Chopra refused to direct Ra.One’ – Shah Rukh Khan

MUMBAI: Shah Rukh Khan says he had approached his friends Karan Johar and Aditya Chopra to direct his mega-budget Ra.One but they chickened out.

“I went to all directors to make this film (RA.One) and even my own friends like Karan or Aditya. They all are ‘lallu’ (idiots) I say. I wanted to do something more than a romantic comedy,” said Khan.

Khan, who plays a superhero in the film which is releasing 26 October, is hoping for positive things for the project.

“I have been informed that I am officially broke and Ra.One has turned out to be one of the most expensive films. If this film does well, it will go down the history and will be remembered. I am glad I have bought something to India which has never been seen before… I am very inspired by Krrish and Drona,” he said.
